In the early 60's most weddings had a main meal of chicken. It was a delicacy then. Dad thought that he could become rich by selling chooks! Bill, Muriel and Susan were staying with us at this time. Dad bought the new born chicks and the many layered incubators to keep them in. He also bought turkeys and ducks. Dad had no knowledge of how to run a chook farm. He had budgeted to feed the chicks but not the BIG chickens. Feed was in short supply as was money! Bill woke Dad one night to tell him that the baby chicks were very sick and some were dying. All that Dad could offer them was brandy. They seemed to enjoy it! Made them a bit wobbly on their legs.
I plucked and gutted many chickens during that time. Cannot eat them, though.

Plucking chickens - need to soak them in a bucket of water first.
